Kevin Billings: The Rogue Secret Service Agent

Kevin Billings was one of many Secret Service agents who has dogged my heels for several years has had a little adventure of his own in the Congo recently made national news and points to the rogue nature of a major federal law enforcement agency increasingly out of control.

I first met Agent Billings in November, 2001 while walking in downtown Orlando and dodging the rain. I passed by the entrance to a bank building on Orange Avenue when this middle aged grey headed guy dressed in a raincoat literally leaped out into the rain by my side and said,

"I'm Kevin Billings of the Secret Service -- How are you, Mr. Barbour?"

"Minding my own business, " I replied and ducked into a Starbucks for a coffee as I had pre-planned.

Billings and another agent followed me into the coffee shop. The other agent was a giant who stood with Billings against the wall in a hostile manner with an aggressive stare from tiny blue eyes in a fat ugly face while I purchased my coffee and sat down. Billings then moved to my table and asked, "May I join you?"

The other agent, who looked like an adversement for "Charlie Atlas Body Building" stared at us from across the room with arms crossed and very tense posture that announced to me better than words, "Please give me an opportunity to put my considerable martial art skills to work."

I should note that the other patrons in the coffee shop immediately picked up on the fact that they were the audience to a small drama and ceased their quiet conversations while others pretended intense interest in their newspapers and coffee.

"It's a semi-free country; you may sit where you want to, I suppose," I said.

Billings settled into a the small chair opposite me while a puddle of water formed at his feet and continued, "Mr. Barbour, the reason I'm bothering you in a public place is because you have refused all contact with the Secret Service."

"So what? Show me the law that says I have to talk to you. I have nothing but contempt for you and your ilk....So bugger off! Do you not understand? My case was closed by the government about six months ago. Would you like the U.S. Attorney to explain? I have nothing to say. End of story. Fade to black. Get out of my face."

"I understand your position, MISTER Barbour" said Billings rising to his feet and raising his voice. "You should understand our position: You are a Class III subject who will always be montiored by the Secret Service until the day you die. I offer your best option which is cooperation with us. This means that you will call me at least once a week for a chat. Otherwise, be advised that non-cooperation comes with a large price tag. Do you like your job? "

Billings then gave me his card with his name and telephone number. "Think about it. It would be wise if you called me concerning your decision later today." Billings and the large ape-like creature disappeared into the rain. I tore up the card and threw the pieces on the floor.

The audience in the coffee shop cleared their collective throats and went back to their quiet conversations and newspapers as if they had witnessed nothing of importance. This attitude on the part of the ordinary American public reminded of that wly survivor of Nazism and World War II, Sergeant Schultz of "Hogan's Heroes" and his classic lines -- "I see nothing. I hear nothing. I know nothing."

After the departure of the evil twins the rain poured harder and the thunder from lightening was heard, which was not typical of rain storms in Central Florida in November, but is nevertheless a great ending to a scene from the master director in heaven.

A couple of days later I was fired from my job. The alleged reason was a log I didn't fill out properly. I found out later from a former co-worker that my boss received a visit the day before from a "grey headed middle aged guy who was well dressed in a business suit."

I'm not surprised that Billings made it out safe from the Congo.

Perhaps the puppet master wanted all his puppets back undamaged.

From the article: Billings, a 21-year veteran of the Secret Service, retired in February 2004 to become a security consultant. He worked in Iraq before becoming affiliated with Nexia and AQMI. Nexia's Web site lists him on its board of directors and as an executive officer. In the Secret Service, Billings served on the security detail of President George W. Bush in Washington and Houston, and was a member of the agency's elite counterassault team, a SWAT team ready to repel attacks.

"Kevin was a great agent," said Ric Johnson, who retired in 2001 as special agent in charge of the Orlando office.
"He was one of the best I've ever had. We're keeping our fingers crossed and hope that they do something diplomatically. I'm concerned about him."

Orlando hostages released from Congo

Jim Leusner Sentinel Staff Writer May 27, 2006, 10:13 PM EDT Three security officials taken hostage in the Congo -- including two from the Orlando area -- were released and were on a plane home Saturday night, the company said. Retired Orlando police Capt. Joe Robinson, retired U.S. Secret Service agent Kevin Billings of Maitland and contractor Seth Taylor of San Diego were freed after a probe into their activities as security consultants concluded.

"The boys are released and they are on their way out of the country," Woody Johnson, a spokesman for AQMI Strategy Corp. of Orlando, said late Saturday night. "They are in the air somewhere over Africa."

For security reasons, he would not name their destination. But he said an AQMI jet with a medical team was dispatched to meet them. "I'm ecstatic that he's out of danger and on his way home," said Billings' former boss, Ric Johnson, retired head of the Orlando Secret Service office. "I've been on the phone since last Saturday calling everybody I know and getting people fired up in Washington about it so they could provide whatever assistance necessary."

The men were acting as security consultants for Oscar Kashala, a physician with dual U.S. and Congolese citizenship who is running for president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. "They seem to be very upbeat and have some medical issues," Woody Johnson said, adding that one or more of them may have malaria, an infectious disease transferred to people through mosquito bites. AQMI (pronounced *AK-meeACME) is run by Orlando venture capitalist Frank Amodeo, 45, who incorporated it in October 2004 in Orlando. Congolese government officials had accused the men of plotting to overthrow the west central African government, which was believed to be a politically motivated accusation.

On May 18, Billings and Robinson had boarded a flight to Paris when they were detained with their driver, Taylor. They were initially released, but authorities took their passports and tickets, telling them to return to the airport the next morning, Middleton said. About 3 a.m. they were arrested at a private home. More than 30 people were detained from various locations. Most were employed by the South African company „©Omega Risk Solutions, which was working on several projects in Congo the country including helping AQMI with security logistics for Kashala. Robinson, a married father of two, left Orlando the city after more than 26 years. He retired as a captain with the Orlando Police Department and had served as a driver, bodyguard and law enforcement liaison for Mayors Glenda Hood and Dyer. He was a deputy chief of staff for Dyer when he left in January to do corporate security for Mirabilis Ventures. For years, he had conducted security training seminars and classes on the side for local, state, federal and foreign governments, former colleagues said.

In the Secret Service, Billings served on the security detail of President George W. Bush in Washington and Houston, and was a member of the agency's elite counterassault team, a SWAT team ready to repel attacks. Billings is married and has two teenage daughters.

My case is officially closed by the U.S. Department of Justice since June 26, 2001 at the completion of over four years in prison, three years probation and a heavy fine. However, the SS continues to monitor my activities and as recently as last week involved me in an ugly incident while in performance of my duties at Central Care Mission.

In early December of 1969, I returned home to America after spending nearly three years overseas, much of that on various assignments in Southeast Asia where war then raged.

I had been scheduled to leave in January, 1970 -- But I was called into the Orderly Room of my unit and told by the First Sergeant that I could leave Vietnam a month early....However, (always the "However!") if I would agree to be the escort for hundreds of bodies of fallen soldiers & marines being transported from Da Nang, AFB to Travis AFB near San Francisco in a C-141.

The policy of the military are that the caskets of the honored dead are always guarded until burial takes place.

I agreed and within 24 hours was all alone in the cargo compartment with the flag draped metal outer coffins that had the names and service numbers of the fallen patriots. The long flight across the Pacific was without event. We stopped only once for refueling (in Japan) and except for being relieved every hour on the hour for 10 minutes by an Air Force crewman, I was required to stand at attention under arms and guard the dead.

When the aircraft landed at Travis, AFB in the early morning of a picture perfect California day, I turned over my task to the Air Force Burial Guard who would see to it that the bodies would be escorted to their various destinations.... I was relieved and went my way to San Francisco International and home for Christmas for the first time in three years.

My next assignment was at Arlington Hall Station near the National Cemetery. I volunteered as an additional duty to be assigned to the Honor Guard in order to take part in the funerals of many soldiers buried there. I felt it was the least I could do for them.

The muffled drum's sad roll has beat The soldier's last tattoo; No more on life's parade shall meet That brave and fallen few. On Fame's eternal camping-ground Their silent tents are spread, And Glory guards, with solemn round, The bivouac of the dead.

Snide MSM'ers and the CAIR propagandists attacked those of who called these thugs what they are: terrorists.

This week, the snipers faced off against each other during Muhammad's trial for six of the murders in Montgomery County. Muhammad is serving as his own lawyer. On the witness stand, Malvo revealed the chilling details of just how much terror the Muslim pair sought to inflict in this community--from bombings to mass murder of children and pregnant women to the random slaying of six white people a day for 30 days.

'Eternity' to Here by Peggy Noonan

Americans didn't always appreciate our soldiers the way we do today.Thursday, May 25, 2006 12:01 a.m."The first note was clear and absolutely certain. There was no question or stumbling in this bugle. It swept across the quadrangle positively, held a fraction of a second longer than most buglers hold it. Held long like the length of time, stretching away from weary day to weary day. . . . This is the song of the men who have no place, played by a man who has never had a place, and can therefore play it. Listen to it. You know this song, remember?"

For novel readers who care about war and warriors who cared about novels, a great memory is the picture, seen in tens of millions of imaginations, and finally in a film, of Pvt. Robert E. Lee Prewitt playing taps at Schofield Barracks, 25 miles from Honolulu, on the eve of Pearl Harbor, in James Jones's great novel, "From Here to Eternity." It was published 55 years ago and sold three million copies, and it is on my mind today because I'm thinking about the taps we will all hear this Monday, Memorial Day, at ceremonies and in cemeteries throughout the country. When I hear it I'm going to think of what my father always said when he heard taps. "Play it, Prewitt," he'd say. Because that character was like men he'd known in the American army of World War II.

It is good that we have this day to remember heroes, to think again of those who over the centuries put themselves in harm's way for our country, for us. It is good that we remember, and take inspiration from, tales of valor, of flags carried uphill, like the one carried by the intrepid young First Lt. Arthur MacArthur, during a Union charge in the Civil War (he would go on to become a lieutenant general and the father of a son named Douglas), and heavily defended positions taken by a lone soldier, like Sgt. Alvin York in World War I. It's good to remember the simple human potential for bravery that lives within all of us, and that in some is fully tapped and met with brilliant, unforgettable actions.

The starkest description of the meaning of what the members of the armed services do, and have done, is the simple observation that freedom of speech was not secured for us by editors, readers and writers, but by soldiers who gave their lives to win it and would give their lives to defend it.

But thinking of "From Here to Eternity" has me thinking of the old American Army of the 20th century, the Depression era, peacetime army that Jones captured as no one else ever had. It was an unspectacular thing, that Army, or seemed so until December 1941. Jones's Pvt. Prewitt was a lost Southern boy who found a home in that Army. He and his friend Angelo Maggio of New York "could live better Inside."

They came from little, had no money, had received indifferent public educations, and the 1930s Army they joined was neither racially integrated, gender-neutral nor adequately funded. The great divide, the caste system, was between officers and enlisted men. The latter were given training and discipline and were left with a passionate and passionately mixed attitude toward the institution that made them part of something as it chipped away at their individuality, that employed them and enslaved them, that made them men and often treated them like children.
When James Jones himself joined the Army, in 1937, a young man whose options seemed limited, he wrote back home, "This place is hell. They herd you around like cattle; they order you around like dogs; they work you like horses; and they feed you like hogs." In the 1953 film of the novel, directed by Fred Zinnemann, the first shot after the credits is of men marching in brisk formation. But all you can see are their boots on a dusty field, perfect but anonymous.
They were not, the men of the peacetime, Depression-era Army, especially respected by the public they served.

Our current Army is very different. Our people respect it, and its members are comparatively well-educated, largely middle-class, highly professional, and integrated in race and sex. Chances are good its members will be thanked when they return home from wherever they are--Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, elsewhere. It is a good thing we finally appreciate them, a good thing we, as a society, give them the honor they deserve. There are heroes among them, and their exploits too will be spoken of this Monday, and in Memorial Days of the future.

So here's to them. May they flourish and be safe. Here's to the heroes down the ages who did valorous, death-defying, death-ignoring things. And, this Monday, here's to someone else. Here's to the uncelebrated of the armies of the past, to all the men who went unlauded, who wanted to serve brilliantly, who didn't always quite make it or didn't quite get the call, who were replacement troops never sent to the front, whose service was comparatively undistinguished or unrecognized, but who were there, and did their job, and for us. And that's enough. Here's to them, and to their fictional counterparts Prewitt and Maggio, and all those who once found a home in the army.

As a decorated combat veteran of Bush's Iraq misadventure, I am all too familiar with the saying "the first casualty of war is truth." Obviously, this made me irresistable to girls, and I easily bagged the entire pom squad after winning my 4th straight state debate championship. No shit dude, I totally taped the whole thing, but I left it in the VCR and my stupid mom recorded it over with an episode of Wheel of Fortune.

Iran, in its first reaction to a European Union proposal aimed at resolving a nuclear standoff with the West, said suspension of uranium enrichment breached Tehran's legitimate rights.
"The suspension of nuclear activities is in contradiction with our legitimate rights," Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in Kuwait in response to a question on whether Tehran was prepared to suspend the enrichment during proposed negotiations.

"(This also) is not within the provisions of the (nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty) NTP," said Mottaki Saturday after talks with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Sheikh Mohammad al-Sabah.

If present trends continue, the population of Russia will decline from 143 million to 100 million by 2050. Not only that, but by 2050, most of the population may be Moslem. Currently, about 15 percent of Russians are Moslem, and the average Moslem family has three or more children, while the average non-Moslem family has one or two. While Christian (largely Slavic) Russians have seen their numbers tumble, the Moslem population of Russia has grown over 40 percent since 1989 (from births, migration and conversions). There has also been a religious revival, with the number of mosques growing from under a thousand when the Soviet Union collapsed, to over 8,000 today. That means Moslem men drink a lot less, and live healthier, and longer, lives.

Freedom and Pain

I hope I'm recovering from an injury I suffered a few weeks ago. At this time there is almost nothing I would like more than to escape from pain. I can hardly think, I can hardly sit still without wanting to stand up or lie down or roll around. Regardless of what position I find myself in I hurt. But it's not that big a deal, not that horrible thing that pain can be in real life when the pain is life of itself. I hurt, but I'll get over it or come to terms with it and go on with it and cope. There is pain far worse than anything I'm feeling now, and, trivial as it might seem, it's in the soul. I grit my teeth, bang my head, and moan. It's nothing compared to the life of pain most people on Earth are suffering today. Most people are dying. They are dying of fear and the agony of self-torment and from loss of meaning. Not only are they dying, they hope to kill as many others as they can while they go. They hope to kill you and your children. They want to kill everyone. My pain is rational. It had a beginning, a cause, a treatment, and perhaps someday an end. For the others, the end is the end of life.We'll see below a couple of short extracts on Eric Fromm, Escape from Freedom. CAIR attacks LGF For Telling The Truth

Corrupt Democratic Congressman caught on videotape!

Being a crook is bad enough, but being a stupid crook is totally unacceptable in most circles except for the Democratic Party.

A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.

At one audiotaped meeting, Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company's deal for work in Africa.

As Jefferson and the informant passed notes about what percentage the lawmaker's family might receive, the congressman "began laughing and said, 'All these damn notes we're writing to each other as if we're talking, as if the FBI is watching,'" according to the affidavit.

Jefferson, who represents New Orleans, has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

This Ensign amendment would undermine the work of these people by preventing lawfully present immigrant workers from claiming Social Security benefits that they earned before they were authorized to work," and then he said, "If this amendment were enacted, the nest egg that these immigrants have worked hard for would be taken from them and their families." I just know there are some of you people out there who are obsessed and overridden with guilt, and you're going to call, and you're going to say, "But, Rush! But, Rush! They paid into the Social Security system. They should get benefits."

That's not why they got the card! It's not why they went the out and got the card. They got the card to commit fraud! They went out and got an illegal Social Security number. They stole somebody else's. They did this to violate one law after another from employment to banking to insurance. (McCain impression) "But they built up a nest egg. A nest egg! They were doing work Americans won't do, Limbaugh!" And these guys, they all know how you feel about this. I mean, this isn't just flipping you the bird. They are mooning us. Then, almost as mind-boggling: "The Senate voted yesterday to make English the national language of the US, declaring that no one has a right to federal communications or services in a language other than English except for those already guaranteed by law. The measure, approved by a vote of 63-34 directs the government to preserve and enhance the role of English..." Who is the Senate if not the government? Who are they directing? Who are they telling to do this? But that's not the point. "...without altering current laws that require some government documents and services to be provided in another language." So they vote to make English the, what? National language, and then they say, "Screw it. It didn't mean anything." Yeah, if it's going to be the national language, we're going to make the fly the national bird, but we're still going to have the eagle on the dollar bills and everywhere else. (sigh) "Opponents, however, said it could negate executive orders, regulations, civil services guidances, and other multilingual ordinances not officially sanctioned by acts of Congress. Only nine Senate Democrats voted for the amendment, one Republican, Pete Domenici of New Mexico voted against it. The impact of the new Senate language amendment was unclear even after its passage." McCain again (impression): "In my view, we had it watered down enough to make it acceptable." (laughing) Exactly right: watered it down to the point of meaninglessness, and when you got it watered down to where it has no meaning, then McCain says it's acceptable. Would you like to hear some floor debate on this? Would you like to hear what's passing for learned, persuasive debate? Let's go Senator Durbin. He was on Good Morning America today. Charlie Gibson said, "Yesterday the Senate accepted 370 miles of fence, accepted an amendment that would make English the national language. Are you accepting a number of what we might call conservative amendments on this issue?" (interruption) What? Krauthammer asked the question (actually I know when), "Since when did caring about illegal immigration become 'conservative'?" I guess it's something to do with law and order. "Are you accepting, Senator Turbin, a number of what we might call conservative amendments on this issue in order to protect what you think is the core of the bill, the guest worker program, and a path toward legalization for people who have been here for a considerable amount of time?"

DURBIN: Yes. English is our American language. If you're going to be part of our country, you have to learn English to be a citizen, and that's, uh, a requirement that should be maintained. What we want to make sure is that in areas of health and safety and national security, there's no prohibition against the government using a language other than English. If we are, God forbid, threatened with avian flu, don't we want to make sure that everyone within our borders understands that threat so that we can stop that epidemic?

RUSH: There you go, folks. There's what passes for learned insight, brilliant insight. "Well, if something like the avian flu, the bird flu, pandemic, epidemic, academic, whatever it becomes, don't we want everybody to hear the warnings?" And then Dingy Harry, who people have forgotten, but Dingy Harry introduced an immigration bill back in 1993. He introduced an immigration bill that ought to be the immigration bill they are debating today, and it ought to be adopted. Dingy Harry introduced one of the most sensible immigration reform bills, and now he's just talking a totally different game, and his excuse is, "Well, my -- my wife made me see the error of my ways two weeks after I introduced the bill." But that's like a flat-out lie because months after he introduced it, he brought it back! Well, Dingy Harry has said this English as the official language of the country is racist. "This amendment is racist! I think it's directed basically to people who speak Spanish." What? The Spanish language? How can...? How can...? How can...? (sighs) Excuse me, folks. I'm getting... (story) "A poll by Zogby International earlier this year found that 84% of Americans say that English should be the official language of government operations; the same poll found that 77% of Hispanics agree." So Dingy Harry is calling 84% in the Zogby poll racist along with 77% of Hispanics racist, and would you like to hear the learned insight of Dingy Harry? This is yesterday on the Senate floor.

HARRY REID: I really believe this amendment is racist. I think it's directed, basically, to people who speak Spanish. I can remember once being so frustrated. I was a guest in a hotel. Now, I had locked myself out of my room, and there was a lady pushing the cart, and I told her I'd like to get back in my room. She did not know what I was saying! She could not converse with me in Spanish! So as luck would have it, here comes one of my sons. The minute he spoke to her in Spanish, her whole demeanor changed. She became a different person, because, through my son, we could communicate.

RUSH: Okay. So, uh, it was... That's not an impersonator. That's actual Harry Reid sound bites from the Senate floor yesterday. So in addition to this being literally stupid in terms of persuading anybody, it is ladled with what we've been talking about recently: guilt. You see, we had a woman from a foreign country working in a hotel where Dingy Harry was staying. She's in America, but because he didn't speak her language, he felt so bad. He felt so bad! But fortunately his son was able to speak with her, and the woman's life noticeably changed right there on the spot. She was able to communicate. After that, he's got another heartwarming tale, the heartwarming tale of one of his employees: Federico. ( story story ) Here's that bite.

HARRY REID: I have a young man that works for me -- an American citizen, of course -- Federico.

RUSH: Wait, wait! Stop the tape! "An American citizen, of course"? What's that! Nobody's accused him, have they, of hiring illegals? He's defending a charge he hasn't been faced with.

HARRY REID: Federico comes from Puerto Rico.

RUSH: Mmm-hmm.

HARRY REID: He speaks Spanish.

RUSH: Si.

HARRY REID: I don't think I would embarrass Federico even though he's well-educated, long time American citizen. He still speaks with an accent. He speaks very good English with a slight accent. He was so sick. He didn't know what was wrong with him, and he was afraid when he went to the hospital emergency room -- he was afraid! -- that he couldn't communicate with his health care workers what was wrong with him, and he asked, is there anybody here that speaks Spanish? And there was one of the nurses, and he was able to communicate. He felt better.

RUSH: This, again, the highlights of the debate on the English language proposal on the floor of the Senate yesterday. After this, an aide passed Dingy Harry a note that was on a folded sheet of paper. (We don't know if it was Federico who passed the note or not.) After reading the note, Dingy Harry tried to clarify his remarks. He said now, wait. I don't want to be confused here. Senator Inhofe isn't a racist, but his bill is. This is what he said.

HARRY REID: I have served in the Congress of the United States with Jim Inhofe for many years, and we disagree on issues on occasion. But even though I feel this amendment is unfair, I don't in any way suggest that Jim Inhofe is a racist. I don't believe that at all.

RUSH: Oh! Oh! Of course not!

HARRY REID: I just believe that this amendment has -- and with some people, that connotation, not that he's a racist but the amendment is.

RUSH: "We support the troops, but we don't support the mission."

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Now, folks, I have a theory. People are saying, "Rush, how can this literal childish insanity, this comedy act be going on in both chambers of Congress?" It's easy. It is very easy to explain. There is no elected conservative leadership in this country right now. The president is not leading a conservative movement. He's a Republican president; he has some conservative issues he believes in. He's not leading a movement. So everybody is off the reservation and acting on their own. Some are trying to assume this conservative leadership position, or at least they're trying to convey that's what they want. But there is no elected conservative leadership. I mean, you have a lot of elected conservatives, but none of them are nationally known. They're not national leaders right now, so...bam! They just got sparks flying all over the country. There's no discipline. There's no allegiance to a set of principles that have been laid down in an agenda. I mean, this English language thing, the law doesn't abolish Spanish! I mean, Dingy Harry can run around talking about his buddy Federico and the Spanish-speaking maid all he wants, and he can try to make us sound like it's our fault that they can't understand us and we can't understand them in our own country, but the bottom line is this meaningless amendment, this meaningless amendment does not abolish Spanish. It just requires the government to do business in English. That's about as far as they want to go in offering incentives for immigrants to learn English.

Oxymoron: "Muslim-American"

I have long favored the closure of all Mosques and the banning of the Muslim religion.

Majority of Germans say no peace with Islam

Experts fear new conflicts after a study published this week showed most Germans doubt the Western and Islamic worlds can peacefully coexist. Mistrust of the 3 million Muslims living in Germany appears to be growing.

In spite of official attempts to promote dialog among religions, distrust of Islam continues to grow, with 60 percent of Germans expecting tension between traditional German society and immigrants from Muslim countries, according to an Allensbach study commissioned by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper. “Germans are increasingly of the opinion that a lasting, peaceful coexistence with the Islamic world will not be possible,” the researchers said in the survey, released Wednesday.

Some 56 percent of Germans said they believed a “clash of cultures” already exists, partly a result of recent incidents that received a large amount of media attention, according to the survey’s authors Elisabeth Noelle and Thomas Petersen. The case of a Berlin “honor killing,” a quarrel over two Bonn students who wore burkas to school and discussions concerning increasing schoolyard violence among immigrant children have all made headlines in the German press recently. “In view of the diffuse feeling of being under threat, and the suspected intolerance of Islam, the readiness of Germans to show tolerance to the Muslim faith is sinking,” Noelle and Petersen wrote.

Christianity: A Suicide Pact?

Charles Martel asks a very interesting question: Is Christianity a suicide pact?

I am a Catholic. I've always found solace and comfort in my Church. I love the sacraments, the rituals, the traditions and the beautiful churches and cathedrals which inspire awe and elevate the spirit. But I've been troubled recently by what seems to me to be a counterfeit version of Christianity, one that preaches pacifism in the face of a implacable enemy committed to the destruction of our Church. The enemy I am referring to is of course Islamism as embodied in the teachings of the Koran. Muslims by the millions are willing to die for their "faith" while your "turn the other cheek" and "love your enemy" brand of Christians are not only unwilling to fight for their faith they compound their sins by criticizing those that are. Has Christianity and Christian civilization become so depleted and impotent that it can no longer successfully defend itself? I cannot believe that the New Testament is a suicide pact.

Heroic Somali Freedom Fighter To Come To USA

The actions of the Dutch government in the case of Ayaaan Hirsi Ali, anti-Islamic Freedom Fighter of world fame, are absolutely disgusting and yet another example of the cowardly appeasement of Islam by a major Western European nation. What was her great crime against Netherlands that would merit being removed from the Dutch Parliament and country? Ali was a tireless champion of the civil rights of women living under the iron tyranny of Islam.

However, Holland and Europe's loss is America's gain. Ali will take up residence in the USA with a new job at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. Afghan Freedom Fighter First Class: "Give me liberty or give me death"

Military service at best is uncomfortable, booring and an endless repeat of the previous days drills and physical exercise. One veteran of World War II who later became a noted author was no doubt speaking of his own Naval service on a resupply ship when he said, "We sail from tedium to monotony with side trips to apathy."

However, active service as a combat infantryman adds to the monotony of life in the military service moments that are the ultimate test of an individual who in seconds must master the chaos and danger. It is a moment that no training course can fully train an individual to meet. At the moment of contact the soldier will either hold his ground, advance on the enemy, or retreat.

The majority will hold their ground and return fire. A minority will retreat from danger. The heroic soldier will advance on the enemy if at all possible. These are the leaders who win the war -- and they often make the ultimate sacrifice for liberty, or suffer terrible wounds.

RUSH: I got an e-mail from a friend of mine in St. Louis. "Rush, did you hear what Tim Russert said after Bush's press conference today?" He said, paraphrasing -- and I haven't seen this, so I probably ought to double-check this, but we will. Paraphrasing, Russert said, "People go to war to protect their civil liberties, so isn't counterproductive to take away these liberties while doing it?" All of you out there listening, how many of you think we go to war to protect civil liberties? When is the last time you heard a president declare war on the basis that we gotta go protect our civil liberties? I can't think of one, and I have a fertile memory, my friends. Lots of deep, dark crevices in my brain, and still half of it's tied behind my back to make it fair, and even that I don't remember. We do not go to war to protect our civil liberties. That's like saying we go to war for peace. We don't do that, either. You go to war to kill people and break things, and that leads to the other things. The primary reason for going to war, you heard the president talk about it time and time again today, to save lives. We go to war, and we are at war to save our lives so that we will then have the opportunity to continue protecting our civil liberties. Our civil liberties are worthless if we are dead! If you are dead and pushing up daisies, if you're sucking dirt inside a casket, do you know what your civil liberties are worth? Zilch, zero, nada. You aren't even here! Ask the families, ask the people who were in the World Trade Center towers right before they were attacked if they are more concerned with the loss of their civil liberties than the loss of their lives. They can't sue Saddam Hussein for loss of civil liberties because they're dead. How can you sue somebody for your civil liberties being taken away when they killed you first? This gets more absurd with the passing of each hour. Who's next on this program? Texarkana, Texas. Isn't that where Perot was born?

CALLER: I'm not sure.

RUSH: I think it is. I could be wrong, but nevertheless, Alan, welcome, nice to have you on the show.

CALLER: It's great to talk to you, Merry Christmas and thank you for everything you do.

RUSH: Thank you, sir.

CALLER: I just wanted to say I really hope that every conservative will be ready and be patient, and God willing it won't happen, but if it does, if there's an attack after the Patriot Act now is dead, every Democrat, especially the leadership, they need to be held responsible for this.

RUSH: Oh. They will be.

CALLER: Because if it's proven that the attack was made possible because the intelligence industry did not have the tools of the Patriot Act to prevent it like they have the last four years, it's the Democrats' responsibility. RUSH: Said this on Friday. We know who to blame. If we get hit again, we know whose responsibility it is. It's the Democrats in the Senate and these four Republicans: Larry Craig, Chuck Hagel, Lisa Murkowski and Sununu. For what reasons I can't imagine, they voted with the Democrats on this. Probably something to do with civil liberties, because I guess, you know, you gotta be concerned, folks. If you lose your civil liberties, what's life worth? You may as well die. (interruption) Craig doesn't like some of the provisions in the House bill? Larry Craig doesn't like it. Do you know what the provisions in the House bill are that Larry Craig doesn't like? Because I don't know what the provisions in the House bill are that Larry Craig doesn't like. I don't know what Hagel's reason is. I don't know any of their reasons, but I know they weren't sent there to vote this way, that's not what the people who elected them thought was going to end up happening. By the way, can I ask you a question? This whole NSA thing, this is how the template was set. And I'm not going to accept the premise that civil liberties have been violated. Somebody tell me what civil liberties have been violated. I want to know, give me one person who is in jail who has been falsely charged because of the Patriot Act. Folks, I'm going to leave myself out of this. Tempting but I'm going to leave myself out of this. Patriot Act hasn't been diddly-squat to me. I'm going to leave myself out of this. I want to know, what civil liberty is being violated? I want the press to answer this question. If we're going to go to war to protect our civil liberties, what the hell civil liberties have been lost? What are we losing? What are the civil liberties that we have lost? The press is disloyal as ever, nobody is stopping their anti-American reporting apart from a prosecutor that they demanded. What's the press been stopped from doing, what civil liberties have anybody been prevented from utilizing? What? Somebody tell me. Oh, you know who -- I'm sorry. I'm sorry. My friends, I apologize. I forgot what this is about. We are talking about the civil liberties of terrorists. They're the ones who must be protected. They're the ones who are protected against so-called torture. They must be given the rights -- thank you, Senator McCain -- afforded to US citizens under the US Constitution. They're the ones who must get lawyers. That's right: the Patriot Act is screwing with the terrorists. Sorry.

A former Ohio congressman, a man by the name of Clement Vallandigham called the prosecution of the Civil War wicked and cruel and he suggested that Lincoln and the Republican Party were using the Civil War to establish a dictatorship. Troops of the 115th Ohio Volunteer Infantry seized Clement Vallandigham from his home in Dayton. A military commission tried him for treasonable utterances and turned him over to the confederate army. Jefferson Davis didn't want Vallandigham any more than Lincoln did and eventually shipped him off to Canada from where he managed to slip back into the United States. Abraham Lincoln lamented, "Must I shoot a simple-minded soldier boy who deserts while I must not touch a hair of a wily agitator who induces him to desert?" Why, this conjures up all kinds of fun things! Grabbing Dingy Harry, putting him on trial, and expelling him to the remote regions of Pakistan where Al-Qaeda is holing up. That's interesting to contemplate. Abraham Lincoln did it. I don't know how he ever got a monument. The Democrats must have been looking the other way. "The Constitution is not a suicide pact," Abraham Lincoln. This is exactly how the Democrats would like it to read today. It is a suicide pact. We must extend constitutional rights to enemy combatants, according to the left, according to Senator McCain. We have the Tim Russert sound bite. Can we play that, please? Here's Russert. This is after the president's press conference today.

RUSSERT: The reason we go to war is to protect our civil liberties. Constant references obviously to President Nixon back in '72 who tried to monitor, eavesdrop on American citizens and the Supreme Court said, no, you can't do that. I remember President Nixon having the doctrine of preventive detention where he would arrest war demonstrators ahead of time and here in Washington put them into RFK stadium and the courts threw that out.

RUSH: Russert, yesterday, the Meet the Press show today, can't get off of Nixon. He can't get off of Watergate. Because that's the mode; that's the template: Bush is Nixon. This is Watergate. The war is Vietnam -- and they're not going to stop until they convince the American people of this. We don't go to war to protect our civil liberties; we go to war to save our lives. Our civil liberties are worthless if we are dead. If we have all assumed room temperature, folks, our civil liberties don't count diddly-squat. Again, I have to ask these people, what civil liberty is being violated here? I would love for the press to answer this question, what civil liberties are we losing? The press can be as disloyal to the country as they've ever been, nobody is stopping them from being anti-American or their reporting being anti-American. Take it back. Pat Fitzgerald put a woman in jail, but they wanted that prosecutor. They wanted that case.

FDR? Did he protect civil liberties when he rounded up 110,000 Japanese and moved them from their homes and businesses to internment camps? And Lincoln suspended habeas corpus? Lincoln actually deported somebody he thought was just an agitator? Somebody he thought was just an agitator? How about RFK, Robert F. Kennedy, authorizing the wiretapping of Martin Luther King, Jr.? Last I looked, Lincoln and FDR are among our greatest presidents ever, among our greatest civil libertarians ever. You want to test this, go tell some Democrat friend of yours that FDR was no friend of civil liberties. See what you get. They think he's the greatest guy we've ever had, and RFK the greatest president we almost had is also considered to be a fabulous guy and he's out there wiretapping Martin Luther King. Are these the kind of civil liberties these people are talking about? I need to have this answered because I can round up all kinds of Democrats that violate civil liberties left and right in the prosecution of war because the Constitution is not a death sentence, Abraham Lincoln. It's not a suicide pact.

RUSH: You want to hear some more history? Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus when he had reporters thrown into prison, because they wrote against him in the union. He threw nine members of the Maryland legislature into prison to prevent that state from possibly pulling out of the union. This is all history and when you understand history, it will put him in even greater context just how legally and in a restrained fashion Bush is fighting this war. Lincoln is one of our greatest presidents ever. Here he deports an agitator to the south. The south, "We don't want the guy." They recognize a traitor when they see one. They send him to Canada. Can you imagine sending Dingy Harry over to Pakistan or Afghanistan? Ha-ha! Can you imagine putting New York Times reporters in jail? Except the president didn't do that. Sorry, the prosecutor they asked for did. Can you imagine the president doing this? Folks, folks, I can't tell you what I would do if the president decided to put the press in jail. (Gasping) We are in the midst of a war, and when you understand that everything changes -- and if you don't have a historical context for these kinds of things, if you think history began the day you were born, and so nothing that has happened outside your lifetime is relevant, you're not going to understand the important things about the country's past and preserving our country's future. This business of going to war to protect civil liberties that Tim Russert's been on the past couple days, the Supreme Court has made clear that at a time of war the president has inherent powers to protect national security. That's why there's one commander-in-chief and not 535 of them. The court's made a distinction between the criminal justice system and military actions, including intelligence activities related to national security. It's all in the opinions, Tim, go read the opinions, they're right there for everybody to read. You people in the media can read these opinions. They're worried about judicial review, go review some judicial works. It's all in there. It's why some of this stuff is so frustrating. I watched these people ask the president questions and comment, and it's clear they don't know any history, either. Can you imagine the argument you would get into with your average run-of-the-mill White House reporter if sit them down and say, "You know what Lincoln did to people like you? Put you in jail!" "He did not!" "Yes, he did." "Well, he must have had a reason." They can't really complain about Lincoln because he ended slavery. How can they start criticizing Lincoln, the libs? And you know what else he did? He put nine members of the Maryland legislature in jail too, and he suspended the writ of habeas corpus and he deported some former congressman from Ohio who was an agitator, and you think what's going on now poses a threat to the country? You're the threat! But you send an average reporter down and give them just this little bit of history and I guarantee you it will be all over the world that Limbaugh lies, makes things up just to fit his context. They won't even bother looking it up, they'll find it so absurd. "Not possible in this country," they'll say.

Bombmakers in mosque blow themselves up

BAGHDAD, Iraq

An explosion occurred in the basement of the Sheik Abdel Kader mosque at approximately 6 p.m. May 7 in Rusafa, a neighborhood of east Baghdad . According to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 6th Iraqi Division the bomb exploded in the basement of the mosque causing a fire. The Iraqi fire department responded and began suppressing the fire when firefighters noticed an improvised explosive device inside the mosque. The Iraqi police explosive ordinance disposal team arrived at the mosque to clear the holy site of bombs and bomb making materials. The team dismantled six IEDs. Initial reports indicate that two terrorists were wounded and another one was killed in the blast. Iraqi army officials are engaging local leaders to gain more information about the mosque and activities occurring there.

Letter to Bush From The Crazy Dictator Of Iran

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran’s leader has written to President Bush proposing “new solutions” to their differences in the first letter from an Iranian head of state to an American president in 27 years, a government spokesman said Monday. Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki delivered the letter to the Swiss ambassador on Monday, ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told The Associated Press. The Swiss Embassy in Tehran houses a U.S. interests section.

In the letter, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad proposes “new solutions for getting out of international problems and the current fragile situation of the world,” spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham told a news conference. Elham declined to reveal more, stressing “it is not an open letter.” Asked whether the letter could lead to direct U.S.-Iranian negotiations, he replied: “For the time being, it’s just a letter.” Elham did not mention the nuclear dispute — the main obstacle between Washington and Tehran. The United States is leading Western efforts to pass a U.N. Security Council motion censuring Iran for refusing to cease enrichment of uranium.

In Turkey, Iran’s top nuclear negotiator said the letter “could lead to a new diplomatic opening,” but also warned that it did not reflect a softening in Tehran’s position.
