If A Columnist Falls From the Paper, Does Anyone Care?

Self-aggrandizing Moscow-Pullman Daily News columnist Chuck Pezeshki has created a bit of a firestorm over his latest throwaway paean to eco-terrorists published on August 16. In it, Chuck wrote:

Frank Bennett, that ostensible local communitarian, at my last check was living in Palm Springs.

Uh, there's a slight problem there. Frank Bennett does not, nor has he ever, lived in Palm Springs. But why let truth stand in the way of a good anarchist rant?

The problem for Chuck is that Mr. Bennett has many friends in the area. A letter to the editor appeared in the paper today correcting Chuck's lie.

The real question is, where was the editorial staff fact checking? Is Chuck just allowed to publish anything he wants? At a recent Palousitics lunch, Daily News Managing Editor Steve McClure told us that another columnist had been let go for promulgating false information.

We'll see where this goes.

Changes Obama Hopes You'll Believe In

Barack (He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Middle-Named) Obama has almost no legislative record, so he's inventing one.

In Barack Obama's first general election ad he claimed that passed laws that... "extended healthcare for wounded troops that had been neglected." (Public Law 110-181)
But, in reality... he didn't even show up to vote on the bill.

And, there's this, in another ad, he claims that he's a champion of welfare reform, but at the time....

Obama said this about the welfare reform legislation at this time:

"I am not a defender of the status quo with respect to welfare. Having said that, I probably would not have supported the federal legislation, because I think it had some problems."

Barack Hussein Obama: That Was Not The Barack Obama I Knew

Barack Hussein Obama has decided to distance himself from the Barack Hussein Obama who promised to accept public financing for his presidential campaign.

In an e-mail message, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said the decision means that his campaign will forgo more than $80 million in public funds.

In exchange for taking public funds, candidates usually agree to a cap on the amount of money they can spend on their campaigns.

"It's not an easy decision, and especially because I support a robust system of public financing of elections," Obama wrote. "But the public financing of presidential elections as it exists today is broken, and we face opponents who've become masters at gaming this broken system."

Obama repeatedly broke campaign fundraising records during the Democratic primary season. Since January 2007, he has raised more than $272 million.

Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, raised less than half that amount, roughly $100 million, over the same period.

Obama's advisers argue that the Illinois Democrat has set up a "parallel" public fundraising system by soliciting small donations over the Internet.

Two months ago, McCain criticized Obama for appearing to backtrack from a previous commitment to accept public financing for his presidential campaign.

Steve Schmidt, a senior McCain adviser, called Obama's decision to opt out of public financing "a broken promise of staggering dimensions."

Of course, what's broken about the campaign finance system is that Barack Hussein Obama has shown that he can raise a lot more than $80 million.

Al Gore's Movie Fakery

It turns out that one of the more dramatic video clips from Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth" was a computer-generated sequence pirated from another alarmist movie - "The Day After Tomorrow."

(Voiceover) Al Gore's 2006 documentary, 'An Inconvenient Truth," makes the same point with actual video of ice shelves calving. Which shots have more impact?

And if you were flying over it in a helicopter, you'd see it's 700 feet tall. They are so majestic.

(Voiceover) Wait a minute, that shot looks just like the one in the opening credits of "The Day After Tomorrow."

Yeah, that's, that's our shot. That's a fully computer generated shot. There's nothing real in there.

(Voiceover) Audiences expect Hollywood to twist fact into fiction. But Gore's documentary does the opposite, using a fake shot to make a real point, that ice shelves are disappearing, and vanishing ice means global warming.

Apparently, ABC tried to get a comment from Gore concerning the matter, but none was forthcoming:
