"A pity we aren't at war with Islam."
A pity because Islam is at war with us. As the recent cartoon shenanigans have proven, casualties need not take the form of smoldering sky scrapers or headless corpses; fundamental American institutions such as a free press and freedom of speech have not only been attacked, but willingly led to the slaughter by those of us entrusted to protect and defend them – respectively, our easily cowed media and our piteously incompetent representatives.
Nor were these casualties given over to an extreme minority; it is ISLAM, not bin Laden’s ragtag rebels, which forbids depictions of Muhammad. ISLAM, not a disenfranchised few, commanded that embassies be burned and the heads of cartoonists be taken. The mobs of Muslims who took to the streets of Europe to threaten new and improved Holocausts and 9/11s weren’t cave-ridden rejects from Western imperialism – they were our Western-dwelling, so-called moderate neighbors (for if they’re not “moderates,” what excuse do we have in allowing such, to say the least, readily radicalized people to live a mere stone’s throw away from civilization?).
Every ridiculous concession made – whether it’s the orientation of British prison toilets or the censoring St. George – is made not to Sheik Abdul Rahman or al-Zarqawi, but to ISLAM. I quoted Laurence Auster before and I’ll quote him yet again because he stated it so succinctly: “the tolerant people, who don’t believe in any particular truth, will begin living under the laws and customs of the religious people, who do.” And those laws and customs, which will we increasingly find ourselves subject to, are not the laws and customs of some mythic minority but of ISLAM.
I understand the reluctance in many peoples’ minds not to address this conflict as an Islamic one. George Washington himself said the best way to make someone your enemy is to declare them as such. The Muslim world is a powder keg and so long as we keep the wick damp with conciliatory rhetoric (e.g. “Islam is a religion of peace”) we think we can prevent its ignition; which may be true, but only for the present. The potential will always exists, until that keg is gutted, for destruction; and as Muslim populations gain majority footholds in Western countries that potentiality will provide them with ever-increasing leverage. The question becomes: do we name the problem now, and deal with the collective tantrum and mayhem of 1.5 billion Muslims, or do we recognize it later when we’re compelled to do so – the necessity of doing so dictated by the proximity of our necks to the chopping block – but only after sizable enclaves of inassimilable and belligerent Muslims spring up within our own cities?
We have the absolute right to apply our laws and honor our institutions, even if that requires discriminating against the laws and institutions of alien cultures; and especially when those alien cultures are openly hostile to our own. The Islam that requires us—through an ever-present threat of violence—to respect it and to honor its laws while scoffing at the slightest intimation of reciprocity is an Islam that does not belong in the West; it is an Islam, will mature and able, that will bare its teeth and mark its territory in our blood. We will only have ourselves to blame for not putting the bloody dog to death when we had the chance.
