The manner in which Mr. Haider was laid to rest has reopened old wounds for some in Israel.Mr. Noah Kliger, a senior Israeli news correspondent with the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot, who survived a Nazi concentration camp where the rest of his family perished, chastised the Austrians for their handling of Mr. Haider's funeral."Austrians have proven once again that they haven't changed, they haven't learned a thing and that they do not want either to learn or to change...," Mr. Kliger wrote. "The man who on more than one occasion praised his compatriot, the führer of the German Third Reich, received a funeral that only kings or state presidents receive, including a wake ceremony and a cortege in keeping with military protocol, in which alongside of the politicians, high-ranking officers and key position holders, were also present the president of Austria and its prime minister." Mr. Kliger also referred to what he said were "the tens of thousands of mourning and weeping Austrians, many of whom, the war veterans among them" who had served the Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler during his dictatorship as mourning Mr. Haider's death."Seventy years ago on April 10, 1938, 99.7 percent of the Austrians said yes in response to the question of whether they wanted to be annexed (Anschluss, they called it) by the great reich," he wrote.
